The event aimed to promote healthier pregnancies, encourage physical activity, and challenge the widespread misconception that pregnant women should avoid exercise.

Dozens of expectant mothers gathered at the designated car‑free zone, where they participated in guided low‑impact exercises, stretching routines, and light aerobic activities tailored for pregnancy. Trained fitness instructors and health professionals were on hand to ensure safety and provide expert advice.

“Can a pregnant woman exercise? Yes – and it can greatly support both the mother’s and baby’s health,” said a representative from HDI. “Today we joined forces with CYSO, the City of Kigali, and other partners to send a clear message: physical activity during pregnancy is not only safe but beneficial. It helps reduce pregnancy discomfort, prepares the body for labour, and boosts mental wellbeing.”

Research shows that regular, moderate exercise during pregnancy can lower the risk of gestational diabetes, reduce back pain, improve sleep, and promote healthy weight gain. Despite these benefits, many women in Rwanda and across the region still face social or cultural pressure to remain sedentary once they are pregnant.

Through initiatives like this, HDI continues to advocate for evidence‑based maternal health practices and to break down harmful myths. The organisation works closely with community leaders, health workers, and local authorities to ensure that every woman has access to accurate information and supportive environments for a healthy pregnancy.

The event also underscored the importance of multi‑sector collaboration. By partnering with sports organisations and municipal authorities, HDI brings maternal health conversations into public spaces, making them visible and accessible to all.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity. One expectant mother shared: “I used to think I should rest completely during pregnancy. Today I learned that gentle exercise makes me feel stronger and happier. I will continue at home.”

HDI plans to hold similar sessions in the coming months, expanding the initiative to other districts in Rwanda. The organisation invites pregnant women, their families, and health advocates to join future Car Free Day activities.

Kigali, May 24, 2025 – Health Development Initiative (HDI) Rwanda, in collaboration with the Children and Youth Sports Organization (CYSO), the City of Kigali, and other partners, organized a mass sports session for pregnant women during this month’s Car Free Day.
